Looking for the best gardening books for preschoolers to teach your little ones about growing a garden, or just some fun books about gardens? In this post, I’m sharing the best books to enjoy with your young children – all about gardens!
I have enjoyed gardening for years – and have now been able to share that hobby with my toddler. We love getting outdoors and working in our flower and vegetable garden. It’s so good for our young kids to be outdoors, work in dirt, and learn about nature and how things grow.
We can extend that learning indoors with books about gardening! Or, even take our garden books outside on a picnic blanket to enjoy in our garden.

You can plan some easy lessons by reading a garden book, and then doing a small garden project.
Here’s some more fun ideas to enjoy gardening with your kids:
- start seeds inside and watch them sprout
- take your kids to the garden center or a nursery to choose what to plant
- use raised garden beds to grow your own vegetables and flowers at home
- talk with your kids about what vegetables to grow and where to plant them
- grow a flower garden to attract bees and butterflies
- take books and art supplies into your garden area for kids to hang out among the garden
- have your kids help you plant, pull weeds, and water to care for the garden
- take pictures of flowers or vegetables in your garden for art inspiration or make a scrapbook
- have older kids take notes on how well things are growing and what changes to make next year

We love this beautiful board book all about planting a rainbow of flowers!
This is a lovely book perfect for younger children learning their colors – they will love the pages organized by flower colors!

With beautiful garden illustrations, Joanna and her kids tell the story about starting their first garden. They talk about mistakes they made, how they had to be patient, and many things they have learned about gardening.

9. My Garden by Kevin Henkes
This is one of our favorite picture books and we check it out from the library so often, we might should just buy it to have a copy at home!
It’s whimsical and funny and so, so sweet!
A young girl plants a garden with her Mom, but thinks of all the things she would do in her garden – like chocolate rabbits, no carrots, flowers that regrow when you pick them, seashells, and tomatoes as big as beach balls.
You will definitely want to check this one out!
10. Miguel’s Community Garden by JaNay Brown-Wood
In this cheerful book, a young boy is throwing a party at his community garden for all of his friends and he is searching for sunflowers.
