25 Spring Saving Tips
-
Plant a garden.
But, plant only fruits, vegetables, and herbs you know you will use so you don’t actually end up wasting money. We built a raised garden bed and plan on planting just a few vegetables we love.
-
Collect rain water.
Use a barrel system to collect rain water to water your plants insted of running up your water bill. News to me, collecting rainwater may be illegal in some states now??
-
Use DIY cleaners.
When you get ready to do your spring cleaning, opt for DIY cleaners that you can make with just a few ingredients. Better for your health, home, and your wallet! A quick Pinterest search will help you find some great recipes.
-
Buy seasonal produce.
A great year round tip, but always try to buy produce in season. It’s much cheaper. Especially if you shop at Aldi!
-
Cook at home.
Eat at home, and you can save a ton of money! Try easy crockpot meals so you don’t have to heat up your kitchen from the oven.
-
Just stay home.
There are so many fun things to do when the weather warms up, but a lot of those things cost money. There are plenty of fun things to do at home to enjoy the warmer weather! Have a backyard picnic, pitch a tent and camp out, work on a project, run through sprinklers, make ice cream sundaes, or just sit outside and enjoy the spring weather.
-
Find free activities.
If you’re itching to get out of the house, look for free activities. Search for the best nearby hiking trails, take a picnic to the park, enjoy local festivals, or outdoor movies or concerts.
-
Wash your own car.
Instead of heading to the car wash, wash your car at home. Doubles as a workout, too!
-
Declutter and have a yard sale.
As you’re doing your spring cleaning, look for items you aren’t using and get rid of them. Host a yard sale or post items for sale on Facebook marketplace or the OfferUp app. Save your extra cash for a fun activity or something you really want!
-
Pick up a side job.
If you want to make some extra money this spring, pick up a side job. Find things to flip and sell for a profit, sell crafts at local fairs, offer to baby sit or dog sit, or sell produce at a local farmer’s market.
-
Learn how to meal plan.
The Spring is a perfect time to learn how to meal plan before the busy summer. Start with these 5 easy steps. You’ll save yourself time, money, and waste less food. Make sure to plan to eat the produce you are growing in your garden!
-
Give freezer cooking a try.
When the weather is warm, I hate being stuck in the kitchen cooking every night! I love to cook a bunch of meals up at once, and have meals prepared for a few weeks, or even a month ahead of time!
-
Order your meat in bulk.
Now is a great time to finally try Zaycon Fresh to order meat in bulk. You will save so much money and have plenty of meat on hand for freezer cooking. (Update: Zaycon has suspended business operations since publishing this post. I will keep my posts updated with any changes.)
-
Don’t be wasteful.
To get your money’s worth out of the food you buy, use everything you buy. If you buy a whole chicken, use the bones to make broth for soup (perfect for a freezer meal). If you have bread go stale, make breadcrumbs or croutons.
-
Mow your own yard.
Take care of your landscaping on your own, while you enjoy the warmer Spring weather.
-
Exercise outside.
Cancel your gym membership and get your workouts done outside. Go biking, hiking, or walking. You may even find a few friends that want to get together at the park and exercise.
-
Open the windows.
Enjoy some fresh air and turn off the air conditioner to save on your electricity.
-
Walk or bike instead of driving.
If you live close to town, consider walking or biking to work or to shops, instead of driving. I’m pretty sure it would take me about 2 full days to walk to work where we live, so I know this may be impossible for many, but it’s worth mentioning if you can.
-
Skip the vacation.
If you are struggling with your budget, don’t feel pressured to take a vacation or blow your budget for it. Find cheaper or totally free alternatives in your community, like a local water park, festival, or fair. If you already have a vacation planned, check out these 31 budget travel tips to save as much as you can!
-
Have a no spend week.
Plan a week, or weekend, to have a no spend week. Try not to buy anything! Skip the shopping trip, eat what you have at home, and do without if you can.
-
Find community pools or playgrounds.
Look for free community pools and playgrounds to enjoy a fun day at, instead of heading out of town to an expensive water or amusement park.
-
Head to the library.
Check out books and movies from your local library for free.
-
DIY Spring decor.
Head to Dollar Tree to pick up a few supplies and have fun DIY’ing your spring decor. I spent less than $10 getting our home ready for Spring.
-
Check out discount stores.
If you need to do some shopping, check out discount stores for Spring essentials like grills, patio furniture, or yard tools. I recently discovered Bargain Hunt (stores in the Midwest and Southeast) and found some great deals.
-
Buy used and fix up.
If you are looking for a new patio set or outdoor decor, check yard sales, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, or the Letgo or OfferUp apps first. You might find a great deal on something you can repaint and save a lot of money!
Bonus Tip:
Spring clean your finances.
Set up a simple budget, focus on your savings, and build a debt payoff plan.

Great tips! I’ve also found that revamping old furniture is a great way to save money. I’ve reupholstered furniture and changed out hardware on my dresser draw.
