Here is the material list of everything you will need to make your own wood house sign.
Materials:
Scrap wood – I used 2″ X 6″
Stain or paint – I love and use MinWax Early American and regular old white paint
Vinyl decals or paint and stencils (or free hand paint) – I used my Cricut to make vinyls
Sealer or lacquer spray
Sanding pads
Miter saw
Tape measure
Paint brush
Staining cloth
Directions:
1. Cut wood to desired length.
You can make these whatever size you wish! I made some taller than others.
I made some 6″ tall and some 9″ tall.
Cut the wood to length and then use your saw at an angle to cut the house shape.
To do this, you can measure a halfway mark on the top. Then measure about 3″ down on each side and make a mark. Use a ruler or square to draw a line to cut along.
You don’t have to cut the same angle on all of them, if you are making a set. I think they look neat with different heights and angles.
2. Sand any rough edges.
Sand the rough edges smooth.
3. Stain or paint.
I painted half of mine white and stained the other half Early American.
If you are making a set of these, I think they look great mixed up, but feel free to try different colors and stains!
4. Add vinyl decals or paint.
Time to add some wording!
You can do this a few different ways:
- Make a vinyl with your Cricut machine
- Use a stencil and paint
- Free hand paint
I chose the easiest option and used my Cricut machine!
I used white vinyl on the stained wood house signs and black vinyl on the white painted wood house signs.
And a variety of “home” phrases makes for a fun collection!
You could make vinyls or paint things like:
- Home sweet home
- The “last name” home
- Established (year married)
- Home
- It’s so good to be home.
- Welcome
- Blessed
- Thankful Grateful Blessed
- or whatever you like! 🙂
Apply your vinyls with transfer paper.
5. Seal with polyurethane or lacquer spray.
I like to seal my vinyls to prevent them from peeling off and to give the sign a smoother finish.
For the stained wood house signs, I used a clear polyurethane sealer. And for the white painted wood house signs, I used a clear lacquer spray.
(The polyurethane will yellow the white paint sometimes.)
6. Decorate and enjoy!
I really love these in mix and matched sets! So cute and fun for a DIY home decor project!
Find some scrap wood, or grab a cheap piece of 2″ X 6″ to make your own wood house sign!
These are perfect for mantles, shelves, and would make a great gift!
For a pop of color, place these next to some faux greenery.
Such a fun, simple, and frugal DIY craft project! I love how these wood house signs turned out! 🙂
