If you are looking for a super cute and simple craft project to make with scrap wood, this is it! In this post, I’ll show you how to make DIY scrap wood picture frames that you can give as gifts or make to sell!
Ready for the easiest and possibly cutest DIY project?! This is it!
We are always working on some kind of project around the house. And we often end up with a lot of scrap wood and random project pieces.
I hate to waste anything, so I decided to use up some of that scrap wood and make some cute distressed picture frames.
This project was so easy and incredibly frugal! I’ll show you how I made my DIY scrap wood picture frames so you can make your own!
DIY Scrap Wood Picture Frames
Materials & Tools Needed:
Scrap wood – I used 2″x 6″ and 2″ x 8″
Paint – I used white and a pretty light blue leftover from another project.
Twine – You can get this cheap at a craft store or buy a bulk roll for really cheap here.
Ribbon and embellishments – I used wired burlap ribbon and burlap flowers
Staple gun and staples
Paint brush
Sander and sanding pads

Directions:
-
Cut your wood to the desired length.
Decide if you are going to make your picture frames horizontal or vertical and if you want to hold a 4″x 6″ or 5″ x 7″ photo. You will want at least 2″ on each side after the picture is placed.
-
Sand any rough edges.
Sand any rough edges you have after cutting the wood.
-
Roughly paint the wood.
This is my favorite part because you can just freely paint without covering all the wood and without it being perfect. Seriously, don’t try to make this perfect. Just lightly brush on some paint. Flip the wood over and paint the back and let dry.
-
Use a sander to distress the wood.
You can use sandpaper, but a power sander really does a better and easier job. Distress the edges mostly to create a rustic look.
-
Wrap twine around the wood.
Place your photo on the wood to see where it needs to go. Then, staple your twine on the back of the frame and wrap the twine around the wood a few times. Staple the twine and cut the excess off.
You will want twine wrapped around the top and bottom of your photo, so the picture doesn’t bend up.
-
Add any embellishments.
I left some of my smaller frames plain, but wanted to add something extra to the larger frames.
To make the simple burlap bow, just cut a small piece of burlap and a piece of twine. Wrap the twine around the middle of the burlap and tie in the back.
You could also use burlap flowers, colorful flowers, or other embellishments. Hot glue or staple these down.
-
Add your photo.
To add your photo, just slide it under the twine. You can easily change these out without any trouble.
That’s it! Wasn’t that easy?
Total Cost:
This was such a frugal project! I love using things I already have to save on costs. Using scrap wood and leftover paint was a huge savings.
I only bought the burlap flowers for this project so I spent about $5, but I made about 10 picture frames.
See what supplies you have on hand to make these as frugal as possible!
