In this post, I’m sharing an easy step by step tutorial to make your own DIY baby name onesie! This is a fun project for your newborn or a baby shower gift!
Want to make a custom baby bodysuit for your newborn or a sweet gift for a baby shower? I just made this cute baby name onesie for my daughter, and today, I’m showing you the easy step by step tutorial to make your own.
This is a really simple, beginner Cricut project. It only took me about 15 minutes!
DIY Baby Name Onesie – Easy Cricut Project
I love the way this sweet little onesie turned out! You can make your own personalized DIY baby name onesie, too!
Supplies Needed:
Cricut machine – I used my Cricut Joy
Black iron on material (If you use the Cricut Joy smart vinyl, you don’t need to use a cutting mat. You can load the smart vinyl directly into the machine.)
The Cricut Joy is the perfect size machine for this project! I love how easy it is to use, and how quickly I can get my designs cut.
Directions:
1. Open Cricut Design Space.
Select new project.
2. Add text.
Click on the right hand icon to add text. Type the name you want on the onesie.
I used all lowercase lettering, and used two text boxes to offset my daughter’s first and middle name.
3. Resize the text and select font.
Drag the corner of the text box and use the built in ruler to resize the text to the size you need. Mine is about 4.5″ wide.
I used the font Babette.
4. Add a small heart.
Click the right hand icon to add a shape and select a heart.
Resize and place the heart where you would like it. I choose to add it to the very end of the name.
5. Select all and weld.
Click the icon at the top that says select all, then click the icon in the bottom right corner that says weld.
This will merge all of the shapes and text together in one design.
You will then see in the right hand screen just one design to cut.
6. Click Make It.
7. Place the black iron on material on the cutting mat.
Note that if you use Cricut Smart Iron On material, you don’t have to use the mat.
8. Make your selections.
You will need to choose if you are using a mat or not, and the material you are using. I selected Every Day Iron On. These are both questions that will pop up and prompt you to make a selection.
Then, make sure the mirror is on for iron on designs. This option is on the left hand side.
9. Load the mat and press go.
Your Cricut will begin cutting your design.
10. Unload the mat.
When the design is cut, unload the machine and gently remove the material from the cutting mat.
11. Weed the design using the weeder tool.
You can pull the iron on material from the plastic starting in the corner, and slowly pulling around the design.
Use the weeder tool to help you get started and to get the smallest pieces.
12. Heat your heat press to 300 degrees, or to your manufacturer’s specifications.
13. Place your design on the bodysuit.
You can use a ruler to get it centered and even.
This material can easily be moved if you aren’t happy with where you place it first.
14. Press your design on your heat press for 30 seconds.
I use the protector sheet that came with my heat press on top of the iron on design.
15. Let the bodysuit cool for a minute.
After you remove the onesie from the heat press, you can let it cool down a minute before you remove the plastic layer.
16. Remove the plastic slowly.
This was a really simple and fun project to make! The Cricut Joy makes it so easy to complete projects quickly.
You can easily make this DIY baby name onesie for your baby or for a sweet baby shower gift!
