Materials Needed:
2″ X 10″ – 12″ piece needed for one sign
Red paint
White paint
Jute Twine – check Dollar Tree!
Star Embellishments – my exact ones are from Hobby Lobby. They are called ornaments.
For the writing, you can either use your Cricut machine, vinyl material, and transfer tape like I did. Or, you can paint your words on.
Staple gun + staples
Hot glue gun
Sander or sandpaper – 60 grit
Directions:
1. Cut your wood.
First up, you will need to cut your wood. I cut my pieces 12″ in length. If you bought a bigger piece of wood, you can make a few signs or save the leftover wood for another project like these picture frames.

2. Sand rough edges.
Remove any rough edges with your sander or sand paper.
3. Paint wood.
Paint your wood front and back and let dry.
4. Distress with sander (if desired).
If you want distressed edges, use your sander or sand paper – 60 grit works great!
5. Create images with Cricut (or paint).
If you have a Cricut machine, you can easily make the images with vinyl. If not, grab a stencil or free hand paint!
For the Cricut design, you can right click on the images below and save them to your computer. Then, just upload to Design Space. If you need help with that part, check out this tutorial.
6. Apply images with transfer paper.
If you painted your words, skip this step.
Use transfer paper to apply your vinyl image to the wood. I love this scraper to get everything smooth.
Have your embellishments handy to get the spacing right.
7. Seal with lacquer spray paint.
Once you have the wording in place, you can use this clear satin lacquer spray to seal your design and give it a glossy finish.
8. Add twine and staple in back.
Add the twine by wrapping it around the wood a few times, and staple it in the back to secure.
9. Hot glue embellishments on.
Add your embellishments last with a hot glue gun.
That’s it! Now you have your own DIY 4th of July wood sign!
I love the way these turned out! You can decorate a mantle, bookshelf, bar area, patio, or really anywhere!
