DIY Farmhouse Crate – Make for Free!
Supplies & Tools Needed:
- Pallet (cut down)
- Saw (I used a Miter saw.)
- Nail gun & 1 1/2 nails
- Tape measure
- Pencil
Cost = FREE!
If you don’t have any pallets laying around, check the Craigslist Free section.
Directions:
- Cut 7 pieces of pallet wood at 20″ length.
- Place 3 pieces down flat for the bottom of your crate. Place 1 on each side, starting your sides, and measure from the outside of the side pieces for your short side pieces. Mine was 11 3/4″ inches, but all pallet wood is different.
- Cut 4 short side pieces with the measurement from step #2.
- Using your nail gun, start nailing your crate together. You’ll start with one long bottom piece and one long side piece, then move to the short side, and around the other sides. This will get your bottom part built.
- Place the top section on and nail the 4 pieces together.
- Measure from the bottom inside of the crate to about 1″ down from the top. Cut 4 pieces at this measurement for your corner pieces (the pieces that will hold the sides together). Mine was about 5″.
- Nail the corner pieces on to attach the top and bottom sides.
- Check for sturdiness and nail more if needed.
Decorating with your DIY Farmhouse Crate:
There are so many ways you can decorate with your farmhouse crate. I knew I was going to use mine outside, so I left it as rustic as it could be, and didn’t sand it. If you plan to use your crate inside, you would want to sand it and maybe even paint it. A weathered white would be gorgeous!
My DIY farmhouse crate was perfect for the front porch! I added an old chair behind it, an antique milk can, a farmer’s market sign, and some cotton. I love it!
