Have you seen the ads for Hello Fresh all around Facebook and the internet? I wanted to try it so bad because the food just looks so fresh and tasty! And I’m a complete sucker for subscription boxes!
I found an awesome coupon for $40 off your first box and decided it was about time to try Hello Fresh!
In case you are considering ordering from Hello Fresh, I wanted to share my experience with you!
My completely honest Hello Fresh Review:
Why I wanted to try Hello Fresh:
Sometimes it seems like we eat the same things week after week, and I wanted to try some new recipes and adventure out of our normal menu plan.
I loved the idea that the meals only take about 30 minutes to prepare and they include everything you need for the recipes.
The deliver fresh food right to your door and you don’t even have to go to the grocery store!
How Hello Fresh works:
You can check out the FAQ section of the website for more details, but basically you order a box, choose which meals you want, they ship all the ingredients to you, and you make yummy meals!
Pricing:
You can use my code for $40 off your first order, which brought my order down to $19.94. Not bad for 3 meals that serve 2 people! That’s $3.33 per serving delivered to your door.
Without a coupon, 3 meals for 2 people is $59.94 on the classic plan. Ouch. I’m used to $2 per person meals.
Our Hello Fresh Box:
Meals we received:
- A Caesar Salad to Rule Them All
- Vietnamese Marinated Steak
- Cherry Drizzled Pork Chops
Packaging:
I loved the packaging! Everything was so neat and organized. All of the ingredients for each meal came separated in brown paper bags, and the meat was packed under two huge ice packs.
They included a recipe card and nutritional facts.
First meal: Caesar Salad
This was my favorite (and the most simple) meal of all 3! The ingredients were so fresh! I loved chopping all the produce up and making my own croutons! This one was even approved by my husband who usually doesn’t like salads!
Ta Da! Two thumbs up for this one!
2nd Meal: Vietnamese Marinated Steak with Quick Pickled Veggies and Jasmine Rice
This one I was a little unsure of. It looked a little outside of our comfort zone… But the ingredients were fresh and organized and it was fairly quick and easy to make!
The result? One thumb up from me and a husband eating a plain steak with the rice and veggies in the trash. I enjoyed it for the most part, but would never make it again and I couldn’t even get him to try to other half of the meal!
3rd Meal: Cherry Drizzled Pork Chops with Couscous Salad
After the steak meal, I was sure my husband wouldn’t want to try this one, so I made him a plain pork chop and corn, and put the couscous salad on the side. Did he touch it? No.
I really enjoyed the pork chop with the cherry pan sauce. The couscous salad was ok, but I wouldn’t prepare it again.
Quality Ingredients?
I thought the ingredients were high quality and super fresh. Everything was packaged neatly and I love how it was organized for each meal. They only send you the amount you need for that meal.
Some of the ingredients are things we often use, and many of them were very adventurous for us simple folk. Especially my meat and potato loving man.
Easy to make?
These meals were way easier to prepare than I anticipated. They all took 30 minutes or less to make. I feel like I got dinner on the table really fast, and I know having just the right ingredients and the right amount of each item helped prepare the meal quickly.
Final thoughts:
I really enjoyed having the meals sent directly to me and organized so nicely. It was so easy to grab a bag and follow the recipe card. I liked trying new foods I wouldn’t normally try, and cooking more adventurous meals.
Although I enjoyed the experience, I can’t justify spending close to $60 for 3 meals when we normally use meal planning, freezer cooking, and make $2 meals. Especially when my husband only enjoyed 1 out of 3 of the meals.
It was a fun experience, but just not for our budget or lifestyle.
Who I would recommend Hello Fresh to:
Although it wasn’t for us, I would recommend Hello Fresh to couples:
- wanting to try new foods
- who eat out frequently and trying to eat at home more
- wanting to eat more fresh ingredients
- that enjoy cooking together and make it a date
- have the extra budget for it
We probably won’t try Hello Fresh again, but I can’t say it was a bad experience at all. Just not for us simple folk. 😉
If you do want to give Hello Fresh a go, be sure to use the $40 coupon for your first order!
Happy cooking, friends!
