DIY Christmas Ornaments: Rustic Tobacco Stick Ornaments
I made these tobacco stick ornaments to sell at our upcoming holiday craft shows. People have loved them!
The ornaments that don’t sell, I will give as gifts or decorate our own tree.
I’ll show you how to make your own DIY Christmas ornaments, too!
Supplies Needed:
Tobacco sticks (or other scrap wood)
White paint
Drill with small drill bit
Christmas twine ribbon – I love this for wrapping gifts, too!
Christmas embellishments – I got all of mine at Hobby Lobby.
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Directions:
Here’s how to make your own DIY Christmas ornaments!
1. Cut tobacco sticks to about 6″ length.
Using a miter saw, or whatever saw you have, cut your tobacco sticks to about 6″ in length. Mine aren’t all exactly the same!
2. Roughly paint white (if desired) on all sides.
I left some of my ornaments plain wood, but painted most of them. Both look great to me!
Roughly paint the tobacco sticks white to create a rustic look. Don’t get too much paint on your brush, and just quickly coat each side.
3. Drill small, shallow hole in the top of the tobacco stick for the hook.
To create a way for the ornament to hang, drill a small, shallow hole in the top of the tobacco stick to screw the hook in.
To find the right size drill bit, hold your hook up to the bits and choose the drill bit slightly narrower than the threaded part of the hook.
4. Twist to screw the eye hook in.
You may need to use a set of needle nose pliers to make this easier.
Twist the eye hook in the hole you drilled until it is tight and the threaded part is in the wood.
5. Tie a piece of twine to make a hook for the ornament to hang.
Cut a small piece of twine and loop it through the hook and tie it at the top to create a hanger for the ornament.
6. Add a small piece of Christmas ribbon around the hook.
Cut and tie a small piece of Christmas ribbon around the hook to hide the hook a little and add texture and color to the ornament.
7. Use stamps to create a Christmas message.
Use your letter stamps to create a message on the ornament. I didn’t stamp my letters perfectly, so it looks a little more rustic.
You can write whatever messages you like. Here’s a few ideas:
- Merry Christmas
- Joy to the World
- Noel
- Joy
- Merry
- Let It Snow
- Tis the Season
- Jolly
8. Hot glue on a Christmas embellishment.
Add some texture and color to the ornament by hot gluing a small Christmas embellishment either above or below your stamped message.
I got my embellishments at Hobby Lobby. I love the felt embellishments!
That’s how to make your very own DIY Christmas ornaments out of tobacco stick wood. These are so fun to make, and I love the simple, rustic look of them!
You could invite some friends over to make these for a fun evening!
Give these as gifts, add them to stockings, decorate your own tree, or sell them at a craft show.
I hope you have fun making your very own tobacco stick ornaments!
