I love how this project turned out, and it really was very simple to make! It only cost about $10, too!
These wooden door hangers make great DIY Christmas gifts for friends, teachers, church leaders, grandparents, or coworkers too! Or you can make these and sell them on Etsy or at craft fairs.
I’ll show you how to make your own Christmas door hanger!
$10 DIY Christmas Wooden Door Hanger
You only need a few supplies for this project! I love how quick, simple, and frugal this project was. And it looks so good!
Here’s the supplies you need to make your own Merry Christmas door hanger:
Supplies Needed:
15″ wood round project panel ($9 at Lowe’s)
White paint
Red paint
Black paint
Green paint
Gold paint
Silver paint
Wire edged burlap ribbon – Check Hobby Lobby 50% sale!
Christmas ribbon
Cricut machine – I used my Cricut Explore since this is a larger design.
Vinyl (to make a stencil)
Painter’s tape
Staple gun
Directions:
This design is ready to go in the Cricut projects tab. If you have Cricut Access, you can get this design for free. If not, you can quickly purchase the ready to go design.
1. Open Cricut Design Space
To start, open up Cricut Design Space.
2. Click New Project
Start a new project by clicking the New Project tab.
3. Find the design from the Projects tab
I found this design from the Projects tab in Cricut design space. I searched under Christmas and used the term “door sign” in the search bar.
If you have Cricut Access, this design is included.
4. Click Customize
Select the design and click customize.
5. Resize your design
Use the drag and drop feature and the built in ruler in design space to resize the design to fit your wood round board.
6. Click Make It
Once you have resized your image, click Make It.
7. Place your vinyl material on your cutting mat
Apply your vinyl material to the cutting mat.
8. Make your selections
Make the selections in Cricut Design Space when prompted if you are using a mat, and what kind of material you are cutting.
9. Upload the cutting mat into your machine
Upload the cutting mat into the machine.
10. Click Go
Click Go and let your Cricut machine do it’s work.
11. Unload the mat
Once the design is cut, unload the mat.
12. Weed the design
Remove the vinyl from the cutting mat, apply transfer tape to the whole design, and remove the vinyl backing.
Weed the design from the transfer tape.
This makes it a lot easier to apply the vinyl stencil to your wood board.
13. Paint your wood board white
Paint your wood board white, or whatever color you like.
You can do this before you make the design to save some time.
14. Place the design on your wood round board with transfer tape
Once your wood board is dry, place the design on top with the transfer tape.
Use a smoother to press the material to the wood, and gently remove the transfer tape from the vinyl.
This was the most time consuming part of the whole project for me – have patience!
15. Use painter’s tape to secure the edges of the vinyl stencil
You can use painter’s tape to secure the edges of the vinyl stencil and keep everything in place.
16. Paint the design
Once your stencil is in place, you are ready to paint the design.
Use this photo as a guide of what color to paint which areas.
17. Remove your vinyl stencil
Once you have everything painted in, pull your vinyl stencil off to reveal your beautiful design.
You can use your weeding tool to remove the small vinyl pieces.
18. Add a bow and hanger
I’m not great at making bows, but I just tied a couple small pieces of wired burlap ribbon and a couple pieces of Christmas ribbon together with twine. Then, I used my staple gun to secure the bow to my wood piece.
For the hanger part, I cut a piece of wired burlap ribbon and used the staple gun to attach the hanger to the back.
I’m so happy with how this project turned out! I’ve been wanting to make a wooden circle door hanger for a while. Now, I want to try some different designs! π
This DIY Christmas wooden door hanger project was very simple and frugal, but I think it looks so nice and like it cost much more than $10!
The Cricut machine makes this project so easy, and having the design ready to go in the projects area made it super quick!
If you don’t have a Cricut cutting machine yet, I think you will love it and find so many projects to make with it! You can even make gifts or items to sell.
Check out all of the Cricut machines here.
Or, you can always use this as inspiration to freehand paint your own sign!
