I have debated writing this post…
This is not the most frugal thing I could have done.
I wanted to update my clothes, and I wanted to try Stitch Fix since I’d heard so many good things about it.
So, I did it! I put some money aside and I bought some new clothes. I didn’t have to have them, but I wanted to do something for me.
And guess what? It felt so good and I loved it!
I decided to go ahead and write this post in case you were on the fence about ordering from Stitch Fix and needed an honest review.
Hopefully this will help you decide if Stitch Fix is right for you or not. And I can tell you, it’s not right for everyone. Especially those of you on a really tight budget. At least not right now.
If you think you would just love this, but it’s just not in the budget right now, ask for a box for your birthday or Christmas. Or try a side job to make some extra money for extras like this.
Stitch Fix Review: Personal Stylist Subscription Box
What is Stitch Fix?
Stitch Fix is an online clothing subscription service that offers personal stylists and very personalized boxes of great quality clothes and accessories delivered to your door.
You fill out a style profile on their website with your sizes and style preferences, and a stylist will hand pick 5 items for you.
They have really nice brands and a wide variety of items in different styles.
You get to try on everything at home, see what you already have that goes with this or that… You keep what you want, and send back the rest within 3 days.
When you log on to purchase, or send everything back, you can add feedback for your stylist telling them what you loved or didn’t like at all to help them pick items for your next box.
You can set up an order for every 2-3 weeks, a monthly order, every other month, or a seasonal order. Or just order whenever you feel like you need an update!
Check out the FAQ section of their website for more details here.
How much is Stitch Fix?
To order a box, you pay a $20 stylist fee. If you purchase something in your box, the $20 will be a credit towards your purchase and if you purchase all 5 items in your box, you get a 25% discount! If you don’t keep anything, you lose the $20.
The website states the average price per item is $55 (I know! Kinda steep!). I received items from $28-$88.
I filled out my profile with lots of detail, telling them what I really like, don’t like so much, and what I am looking for. They ask how you like things to fit in different areas, and areas you would like to cover.
I added to my profile that I was needing a long, silver necklace to wear with everything, loose fitting tops, and a new pair of skinny jeans.
Here’s what I got in my Stitch Fix box!
Packaging:
Such cute packaging! I couldn’t wear to tear into it!!
But does it remind you of thredUP packaging??
They even included a style guide to help you style your different pieces!
And a note from your stylist! I loved this because it helped explain why she picked these pieces, why she thought I would love them, and what I could wear each piece with.
And they included a prepaid bag for returns.
My Stitch Fix Box
Light Grey Market & Spruce Sam Hi-Lo Short Sleeve Tee $38
Sweet Grey Keanon 3/4 Sleeve Crossover Knit Top $54
Collective Concepts Wilson Tie Neck Top $58
Kut From The Kloth Dayna Distressed Skinny Jean $88
Bay to Baubles Arabella Leaf Pendant $28
I really loved the experience of opening the box and seeing what my stylist picked for me. What I really think is cool is how you don’t know what they are sending until you get it. Because, I would never pick out or try some of these items on!
I really wasn’t sure about the red top or the skinny jeans at first. I didn’t even want to try them on, but I knew if I wrote this post and wanted to be completely honest about my experience, I needed to try everything on.
My stylist did too good! I loved it all!
The white tank is so me and I love it for summer! The light grey tee is so soft and I love the way it falls. The jeans are stretchy and fit like a glove! I love the silver necklace and will wear that with many outfits. And the red top I debated, but decided I have nothing like it, I love the way it fits, and I want to expand my style a little anyway so…
I got everything!! I told you this was not the most frugal thing I could have done.
The 25% discount applied for ordering everything, and my $20 styling fee went towards the purchase also.
See why I almost didn’t write this post?
I didn’t want to be a bad influence to anyone or talk anyone into purchasing something they can’t afford.
And I still don’t want to do that.
If you can’t afford Stitch Fix…
If you have nothing left in your clothing budget, or heck, even have such a thing as a clothing budget, will you please pick a different post to read today like $2 per person meal ideas or this post on meal planning.
And if you really are dying to try Stitch Fix, keep it in mind as a birthday, Mother’s Day, or Christmas present. Or try a side job to make extra money to afford extras. Check your budget and see if you can afford 1 box a year!
Or try a whole different online clothing company with more budget friendly options like thredUP, where you can get great secondhand deals!
If you can make Stitch Fix work in your budget and you’re ready to try it…
First, I would suggest cleaning out your closet to see what you need and what you don’t.
Then, set aside a certain amount of money for your clothing budget.
Then go to the Stitch Fix website, fill our your style profile in detail so your stylist knows what you like, schedule your order, try everything on, send back what you don’t care for or would never wear, and keep what you love, as long as it’s within your budget.
This was definitely a splurge for me. I honestly don’t even know the last time I bought clothing before I cleaned out my closet and ordered a couple things from thredUP.
I love the pieces I received. They seem high end and great quality pieces that will hopefully last a long time. I set my order up for seasonal shipments, so I will get 4 boxes a year. I already asked my stylist for trendy sneakers to wear with the skinny jeans and some white jeans! Can’t wait to see what they send!
For more trendy items and “I just need this to wear once” items, I would recommend shopping secondhand with thredUP. (I got the dress below for $10.99!)
