Are you wanting to find a way to make more money without breaking your back or taking on a second job?
I love having multiple side jobs to bring in extra money! Especially when I can work from my house, work as much or as little as I want, and set my own rates and hours.
Buying and selling items to flip and resell for a profit is one of our favorite side jobs. It’s fun for us to find great deals, to fix and improve things, and then resell them for a great profit.
You can start small and build up to flipping larger and more expensive items.
I’ll walk through the basics of buying and selling items to flip!
The Basics of Flipping: Buy and Sell for a Profit
What kind of things can I buy and sell for a profit?
There are endless opportunities to what you can buy and sell for a profit! Seriously, the sky is the limit here! Sometimes, the “weirder” stuff can be the best stuff to resell.
Here’s a list of things you could buy and sell to give you some ideas!
-
Furniture
My favorite thing to buy and sell for a profit! Find cheap, sturdy furniture at yard sales, FB groups, or for free on Craigslist. Then, paint it, distress it, fix it, whatever it needs and resell it for a good profit. Check out this post for more furniture flipping ideas!
-
Cars
My husband is really good at finding great deals on cars that need a little work, fixing them up, and reselling them for a great profit.
-
Outdoor furniture
Find quality outdoor furniture that just needs a good cleaning or painting and resell it. A patio set or teak wood chairs would be a great find!
-
Electronics
If you know anything about electronics and fixing them, this could be a great thing to buy and sell for a profit.
-
Appliances
Used appliances are all over FB marketplace and Craigslist. They may have a small repair that needs to be made, but most people (myself included) wouldn’t know how to fix. So, they may give the appliance away or sell it for super cheap. You could probably watch a Youtube video to learn how to repair the appliance and resell it for a good profit.
-
Antiques
If you know anything about antiques, I’m sure you can find some great deals out there on items to resell for a profit.
-
Lawn mowers
Similar to appliances, you might find a really nice lawn mower that just needs a little repair and will work perfectly again.
-
Yard tools
Look for power yard tools that are missing a part or need a little maintenance.
-
Farm equipment
My husband has had really good luck finding farm implements at really good prices and reselling them for a great profit.
-
Exercise equipment and machines
A lot of people sell really nice exercise equipment that has barely been used. And many times they sell it for cheap because it’s bulky and takes up a lot of room and they just want it gone.
-
Trailers and campers
Someone in one of my FB group flips small campers and decorates them in retro style! Seriously, the ideas are endless!
-
Toys
Look for brand new or barely used toys that you could resell as a bundle or bigger items individually.
-
Clothes
I’ve heard of several people that buy designer brand clothes at thrift stores and have great success reselling them on eBay!
-
Office furniture
Office furniture is one of the things you can find for free pretty often. Businesses get new furniture, and they just want the old stuff gone. Refinish or sell it as is!
-
Collections
You may find a deal on a collection of things for a great price and be able to resell it for more on eBay, where there is a larger audience. You could consider breaking up the collection to make more profit.
Where can I find things to buy and sell for a profit?
Remember that the list above is just a small list of ideas to get you started. Think outside the box and always keep your eyes open for deals. There are several main places I look for things to buy and resell for a profit.
-
Yard sales
People sell things for cheap at yard sales and you have the opportunity to look at multiple items at once. Yard sales are one of my favorite things about the springtime! 🙂
-
Flea markets
Lots of vendors and lots of products to look at!
-
Craigslist
I start looking in the free section for furniture, then browse other categories for great deals.
-
Facebook groups and Facebook marketplace
You can find almost anything for sale in Buy/Sell/Trade groups and the marketplace. It’s easy to message sellers, ask questions, and negotiate the price.
-
OfferUp & Letgo apps
I haven’t bought anything using these apps, but I have browsed to see what they are all about. I prefer FB and yardsales, but you may have great luck with the apps so I wanted to mention them.
Where can I sell things that I buy and want to resell?
I have the best luck with Facebook marketplace and Facebook groups. I like being able to message people and view their profile before we meet. To get your item in front of a larger audience, you may want to try eBay.

Buying and selling items is definitely one of our favorite side jobs. Compared to doing home renovations and manual labor, this work feels pretty easy. We hope to find more ways to create more passive income in the future.
If you want to dive deeper into buying and selling items to flip for a profit, I would definitely recommend checking out Flea Market Flipper. This husband and wife team are seriously inspiring and have tons of ideas to help you flip items for a profit.
They have made a business out of flipping items, and made $133,000 last year! They have courses available that will help you buy and sell, whether you are a beginner at flipping, already successfully flipping, or somewhere in between. The course is only available a few times a year so make sure to get on their newsletter!
Could you imagine being able to quit your job and flip items full time? #goals
Jim R. says
Teak outdoor furniture can be one of the most profitable items to flip just because of the huge difference in its appearance after a scrub cleaning, sanding, and oil treatment. You can literally make a thousand bucks on a set that someone is giving away for free just because they let it get so neglected and don’t realize how easy it is to tidy up.
